Rowan Workshop in France June 2009

Join us for our fifth Rowan workshop in France at Chateau de St Julien l'Ars from Sunday 21st June - Sunday 28th June 2009. The workshop theme is 'Exploring Colour' with tutors Emma King and Sarah Hazell. For full details of the holiday see below BOOK_NOW or call us on 01273 400030.

Château de St. Julien l’Ars is situated just east of Poitiers on the outskirts of the sleepy village of St Julien l’Ars. The village is just a few minutes walk away and has a boulangerie, grocery store, bar tabac and café. The beautiful château is owned by American Architect Nash Gubelman and his artist wife Linda Softing, their passion for the château and any artistic pursuit makes it the ideal venue for workshops. To see details of the history of the Chateau visit http://www.chateaustjulien.com

The peace and serenity of the château can be felt the moment you pass through the large gates, beneath the 100 ft. Gothic spire of the village church and into the castle courtyard. The 56 acre grounds feature walking trails and private corners to sit and relax with your knitting or a book.

The price of the holiday is £595 per person (approx. Euro 745) for a shared room (twin beds) or £675 per person (approx. Euro 845) for a single room, this includes all workshop fees, accommodation, all meals and drinks on site, excursions, transfers to and from Poitiers airport or station and 10% discount on any purchases made with Kangaroo during the week.
What is not included: Travel to Poitiers from your home destination, entrance fees to places of interest, any snacks/meals consumed on excursions.

The workshops will be run by Emma and Sarah and cover various aspects of knitting, colour work and crochet (see the programme for further details). Their expert tuition will lead you through the mysteries of colour theory, all the methods of working with colour including intarsia and fairisle, working from charts,  embellishements and decorative edgings and help you to complete your own unique project throughout the week.

Sarah Hazell is a qualified teacher whose passion for knitting led her to join Rowan yarns in 2006. Since then she has been responsible for developing Rowan’s workshop programme and teaches on a range of subjects throughout the country. She has led workshops at Knitting and Stitching and at Green Lane Mill in Holmfirth. Knitting led her to explore crochet and in September 2007 she co-authored ‘I love Crochet’ with Rachel Henderson; and has also contributed to Rowan’s ‘I love Crochet’ (Sept 2008). Sarah has a passion for colour and texture and creates workshops that teach the techniques behind the designs, promoting expertise as well as inspiration.

Emma King graduated from Loughborough College of Art in 1998 with a Textiles degree, Emma has worked for Rowan Yarns as a Design Consultant ever since - a role which sees her teaching at workshops all over the UK, as well as a workshop tour in the US. She has written three books - '25 Bags to Knit', 'Fun and Funky Knitting' and '25 More bags to Knit' and has contributed to many Knitting magazines over the last few years.

The accommodation consists of spacious luxury bedrooms spread over three floors with bathrooms shared between two to three guests. All bed linen is provided, but please bring your own towels and toiletries. (The image on the left was an impromptu tour of the bedrooms on the last night of our 2008 holiday, we are not suggesting that more than two share a bedroom, however as you can see some of them are big enough for a party!)

All meals will be taken together in the ground floor dining room and consist of breakfast, buffet lunch and a two course supper with wine. The workshops will be held in the reception room on the first floor of the château, a beautiful light and airy room with triple aspect windows or outside, weather permitting. There are two lounge areas for relaxation, a small library and terraces at the front and back of the property.
